El Burrito Mexican Food Products, Inc., is recalling Springfield Brand- 8 oz plastic cups; and El Burrito Brand, 8 and 11 oz. cups of Guacamole, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes s an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with a weakened immune system.

The affected products were distributed in independent and chain supermarkets throughout Southern California , Arizona , Nevada and Hawaii.

The 8-ounce cups of Springfield Guacamole have a Universal Product Code (UPC) code of 41380 55230. “Sell by” date tags on the container lids are between 4/3/04 and 4/24/04.

The El Burrito Guacamole in 8 oz. cups have a UPC code of 36998 08260. The 11 ounce products have a UPC codes of 36998 00260, and 36998 12260. “Sell by” date tags on the container lids are between 4/3/04 and 4/24/04 .

Production and distribution of this product has been temporarily suspended.

State Health Department Warns Consumers Not to Eat Chaca Chaca, Lead-Contaminated Candy From Mexico

Consumers, particularly infants, young children and pregnant women, should avoid eating Chaca Chaca, an imported chili-based candy from Mexico, because this product may contain excessively high levels of lead that could cause serious health problems, Dr. Gilberto Chavez, associate director and state epidemiologist of the California Department of Health Services (CDHS), warned today.

Chaca Chaca is a brownish-red colored fruit pulp bar that is coated with salt and chili powder. The candy is sold in packages of several small individually wrapped strips that often include a picture of a locomotive on the wrapper. The candy can be found in small markets throughout California.

Consumers in possession of Chaca Chaca candy should dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. The public is encouraged to report any sellers of the candy by calling CDHS' Services Complaint Hotline at 1-800-495-3232.
