Double
L Inc., of Charlotte, N.C., is recalling about 180,000 multi-purpose lighters.
These lighters can leak butane when they are ignited, causing an excessive
burst of flame. This presents a risk of fire and burn injuries to consumers. Double
L has received five reports of excessive bursts of flame, resulting in burns to
consumers.
The lighters are 10 1/2 inches long and were packaged in a cardboard display
sleeve under the brand name "DIY." The brand name is not on the
lighter. The lighters have a black handle, red plastic trigger and on/off
switch, and a silver-colored metal barrel. A yellow label is affixed to the
handle reads in part: "DANGER: EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE...Made in China." The
lighters were sold nationwide at Joann Stores, Family Dollar Stores, Bill
Dollar Stores, and Hancock Fabrics from December 1998 to December 1999 for $1
to $2.
Consumers should stop using the lighters immediately and return them to the
store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers should
call Double L Inc. at (800) 253-1399 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday
through Friday, or write to Double L Inc., P. O. Box 840, Matthews, NC 28106.
